Dr. George H. Waring taught in the SIUC College of Science and College of Agricultural Sciences over a span of forty years (1966-2006). His areas of research included applied ethology of wild, captive, and domesticated animals; ecological and social aspects of animal behavior; communication of vertebrate species; plus behavioral development of neonates. Projects under his supervision were commonly field studies of free-ranging North American fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, or mammal species. Additional studies of vertebrate animals were conducted under zoo, aquarium, farm, or laboratory conditions.
Dr. Terence R. Anthoney taught in the SIUC Medical School as well as Zoology from 1971-2000. His primary area of research was the evolution of vertebrate motor patterns. His projects included comparisons involving patterns of maintenance behavior (e.g., respiration & excretion), comfort behavior (e.g., yawning & scratching), feeding behavior (e.g., striking & regurgitating), and social behavior (e.g., branch shaking, calling, & mounting) in a variety of reptiles, birds, and mammals. Among his contributions to Zoology were his cunning with non-parametric statistics and the teaching of ethological methods.
Dr. Lee C. Drickamer emphasized research on chemosignals, reproductive success, and social biology of house mice. While at SIUC (1987-98), he was Chair of the Department of Zoology for nearly 4 years.
Dr. Hans H. Sambraus focused his research on applied ethology as well as behavioral adaptations of farm animals. As a veterinarian and experienced zoologist from the Technische Universität München (Germany), he contributed greatly to the Zoology graduate program while a visiting professor at SIUC in 1979-80 hosted by Dr. Waring.
Dr. Sue L. Marinier was a member of the Ethology Lab for twelve months in 1981. She came to SIUC from the Republic of South Africa as a post-doctoral student to work with Dr. Waring, present lectures in the Department of Zoology, and pursue behavioral research on horses. She returned to the R.S.A. to teach in the Biology Department of the University of Natal, Durban.
