Joseph A. Beatty (1931-2009)
Dr. Joseph Albert Beatty was born 3 June 1931 in Pennsylvania to Herman and Dorthy (Dunn) Beatty. He earned a B.A. at The College of Wooster in 1959, his M.S. in 1962 at the University of Arizona, and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1969. In 1970, he published his dissertation [The spider genus Atiadna in the Americas (Araneae, Dysderidae)] in the Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology 139 (8):433-518. Joe joined SIUC and the Department of Zoology as an instructor in 1965 and thereafter served as the resident expert on the systematics, ecology, and distribution of invertebrates -- especially arachnids, other non-insect arthropods, and freshwater species. He rose to the rank of Associate Professor in 1972. His major research interests were the zoogeography of spiders of the Pacific Islands plus the aquatic invertebrates of Illinois. He retired in 2000 and remained active in the Southern Illinois Stamp Club until his death at home in Murphysboro (IL) on 11 November 2009 at the age of 78. A troglobitic spider, Oreonetides beattyi (Linyphiidae), is named in his honor.
